If I were to claim that an apocalypse was a great thing in the real world, I would probably be locked up in an asylum, but to tell the truth it is pretty awesome in video games. I love me a good end of the world situation. Whether it is zombies, nuclear detonation, the Fourth Reich or even a combination of all three, surviving in the apocalypse can be a ton of fun. Now I gotta ask myself why do I love such a morbid setting? Well, first off, I generally get to be the hero and come on who doesn’t like being the good guy to safe everyone from complete and utter annihilation. Second, destroying mutations and blowing stuff up just makes my day better. Survival games have some of the coolest combat. Think how awesome the Fallout series is and how many different ways you could terminate those pesky raiders. Not to mention, crafting is always expansive. I can build more stuff in video games than I probably could in the real world. That last statement is true for a variety of reasons, like I don’t exactly know how to attach a chainsaw to an end of a pole. Now if you laughed at the previous sentence then you prove my third point. Apocalypse games are usually pretty funny and goofy. Sure you have some exceptions and those that crawl on the edge of horror, but surprisingly enough there are quite a lot of funny moments in Fallout. And who doesn’t scream and laugh when there friend gets mobbed by zombies in call of duty. And lastly, it prepares me for the real apocalypse when zombies roam the land and moon Nazis attack. So if video games taught me one thing, it is how to survive the end of the world!
